Bowerbirds: Tuck The Darkness In
This song is pretty perfect. Comfort and cacophony. The new Bowerbirds records will be released March 6th on the ever amazing Dead Oceans. There’s a documentary about the making of The Clearing, a tour and so many ways to buy it. Holy smokes that’s a lot of art. These two are fantastic.
“Where the light was rust and the cold was in our knees and our breath poured out over golden fields. Though I could not know then, we’d have but few times like these with all the good smoke in between. Tuck the darkness in, drug the hero across the land, found our fresh start, sow my wildest dreams. Though, I could not know then, I was well in the weeds, a tangled mess, whatever could commence. Before the hours took over, before the full weight was on our shoulders, before the twilight’s cover, before I knew time was such a swindler. I told my dear friend, everything falls to death, we tuck the darkness in, we tuck the darkness in.”

Cate Le Bon: Ploughing Out, Part 1
Many of Cate Le Bon’s songs rock back and forth like psychedelic nursery rhymes.
Plus, she’s Welsh and sounds like Nico. What’s not to love.
“Once I had a reason to fall outside of season, a gentle, gentle coast towards the lookout post. On the last day of the year I’m just happy to be here. Looking at the leaves of time in my mind. In my mind plans are real, ploughing out across the fields, holding court for miles around finding out it’s only sound. Once I heard the handle it’s part strung out the tangles. The gentle, gentle shift sent towards his tender drift and on the worst day of his life he’d still love more things than I like, taping melodies of times in his mind. In his mind plans are real, ploughing out across the fields holding court for miles around finding out it’s only sounds.”

Damien Jurado: Museum Of Flight
I feel like I’ve been a fan for so long, there’s barely anything left for me to say about Damien Jurado. Every time he releases an album, current me and 16 year old me are united by excitement. “Museum Of Flight”, from upcoming album Maraqopa, showcases the man’s undeniable talent for finding melody. I’ve listened to it over a dozen times in the last 18 hours. This record, like the last one, was a collaborative effort with the remarkable Richard Swift. Preorder the album and catch him on the road.
“Falling to the ground I was anxious to be found. You can always go home to the safety of your clothes. Don’t let go, I need you to hang around. I’m so broke and foolishly in love. I turned around to love revealing. What did I learn? It’s not that easy, when you get burned, to go on burning loud. Falling into sound, is that love still fading by, one day we will go home to the safety of our house. Don’t let go, I need you to hang around. I’m so broke and foolishly in love. I turned around, my love was changing. What did I learn? It’s not that easy to go on burning loud.”
As usual, my apologies for any misheard lyrics.

While reading reviews of the new self-titled record by Hospitality, I noticed a trend of comparing front lady Amber Papini’s vocal quality to her English counterparts. Her voice reminds me a bit more of Emily Haines. Luckily, you’ll have an opportunity to decide on comparisons yourself in a few short days. It’ll be released by Merge on January 31st. I can’t seem to turn it off because it’s fantastic.
“So you found the lock but not the key that college brings and all the trouble of a BA in English Literature instead of Law or something more practical. You trade in all your time for money and the blues. No trust fund, no daddy doctor. What do you have to prove? So you found your joy on Saturdays in friends and film and fingering your girlfriend. You father’s pride was beaming when you bought your first home in Garden City. Build a team up in fashion or attitude. Long sober walks up-state, you don’t miss a thing, do you?”

Sharon Van Etten’s upcoming release, Tramp, is truly remarkable. Believe it or not, there are songs on this records that I love even more than this one but I don’t want to spoil the surprise. Get it now. Only some sort of fucked up 2012 miracle could knock this record out of my top five. It is perfection.
“It was a close call sitting in the back of the room with a boy, knew it all but they didn’t know. Closing on my black eye feels safe at times, certain emblems tell me it’s time. Serpents in my mind, looking for your crimes, everything changes, I don’t want mine to this time. You enjoy sucking on dreams so I will fall asleep with someone other than you. I had a thought you would take me seriously and listen up. Serpents in my mind, I am searching for your crimes, everything changes in time. You’ll stay frozen in time collaging girls, controlling minds, you hold a mirror up to every body else. Serpents in my mind, trying to forgive your crimes, everyone changes in time. I hope he changes this time.”
